The Carrier Barrel Horse shakeout machine is a proven one-step solution to casting damage and sand mix problems. Unlike conventional rotary shakeouts, which lift and drop castings, the Barrel Horse shakeout action allows castings to swim in the sand bed, constantly blending via vibratory motion. Through this agitation and mixing method, sand lumps are reduced for a homogeneous return sand.

Optional water addition systems and gas-fired burners provide controlled, simultaneous cooling, and moisture conditioning. This results in a perfectly homogeneous and cooled molding sand that is ideal for recycling and re-mulling.

Incline or Horizontal Configuration

The Barrel Horse design works for inclined or horizontal material flow, which helps when integrating into an existing production line with limited floor space or particular layout constraints.

Water Addition System

The water addition system wets the hot sand, allowing for controlled, indirect cooling of the castings as they agitate. The water softens and aids in breaking down sand lumps.

Gas-Fired Burner

Optional burner attachments that supply supplementary heat for specialized thermal processing or drying.

Soft-Isolation / Spring-Mounted Base

As with other Carrier vibratory equipment, isolation reduces vibration transmitted to building structure, which helps if your plant floor or building isn’t overbuilt for heavy vibration.

Materials of Construction

Material contact surfaces can be fabricated from carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium, Inconel® or a number of other alloys. Specialized coatings are available to reduce product adhesion.

Sand & Casting Separation

Separate metal castings from molding sand while significantly reducing casting damage and preparing the sand for immediate reuse.

Green Sand

Carrier’s Barrel Horse shakeout uses gentle vibratory attrition rather than harsh, direct impacts. Castings are submerged into the sand bed and “swim” to separate the sand. This continuous agitation safely breaks down sand lumps to a homogeneous grain size for reuse.

Casting Cleaning

Unlike traditional shakeouts that lift and violently drop castings, the Barrel Horse allows parts to “swim” in a continuous sand bed. The vibratory agitation cleans the part while eliminating casting damage.

Casting Cooling

Provides controlled retention and material movement to dissipate heat from castings during shakeout. Continuous tumbling exposes casting surfaces, promoting more uniform cooling before downstream handling and finishing.

Lump Breaking & Sand Reclamation

The gentle, tumbling vibration breaks down sand lumps, turning them into a homogeneous mix that is ready to be returned to the system for recycling.

Sluggish Material

Positive mechanical agitation maintains movement of sluggish or difficult-to-handle materials through the shakeout. Controlled tumbling reduces bridging and material buildup while supporting consistent discharge and processing rates.
